What Size & Shape Should My Patio Be?

The greatest thing about patios is how customizable they are. In addition to the various colors, textures, sizes, and patterns of the pavers themselves, you can create just about any shape you can imagine. This means the traditional squared off rectangle is not the only design a patio can be. Alternatively, we have created circular patios, egg shaped patios, and even one we refer to as the peanut patio. Here I would like to discuss some of the things to ponder when planning the size and shape of your patio.

First you must consider who is using the patio and for what purpose. Will this be a small, intimate space for you and your family, or a larger area to accommodate all your guests at large parties? The smaller patio is perfect for enjoying your morning coffee or dinner for two. On the other hand, if you are famous for your parties, you are going to need more space. Additionally, if this patio surrounds your private pool, you will need plenty of room for poolside furniture and activities.

Secondly, you need to look at the space of the desired location for your hardscape. Do you have plenty of room to do whatever you want, or are you limited by the small size of your backyard? Obviously, the more room you have, the more options are available to you. However, many homeowners are restricted by their lot size, but this by no means eliminates the opportunity to be creative. Sometimes, the challenge of a limited area produces the most creative spaces.

The next thing to consider is the terrain of your space. Fairly level yards hold lots of possibilities, but the sloped terrain gives you a chance to be extremely creative. Slanted yards give you options such as a raised patio, recessed patio on the hillside, or a multi-level patio created by joining several smaller patios with steps and walls.

Lastly, the patio shape needs to match the feel of your home. Is there a very formal feel to your home or is it more relaxed and asymmetrical? This isn’t the most important thing to consider, but it is important for the size and shape of the patio to be complementary to your home. A small rectangular patio directly against the back of a three-story house isn’t going to have the best feel to it. Likewise, having a massive patio behind a small house will overpower the property.

As we have discussed, the purpose of the patio combined with the size, slope, and general tenor of your home and yard are all things to bear in mind when planning your perfect outdoor space. The features that make your home unique provide many chances for customization. With the endless potential of your home and property, a skilled designer can help you create the perfect custom patio just for you.
